The O’Kasick boys were caught in a wild shootout on a dirt road with area police in 1957. The brothers were in the process of committing a crime in Minneapolis when they killed a Minneapolis Police Officer and fled north to Anoka.

After being on the run for some time they were spotted with a hostage who was a man from the Linwood area who they were holding for ransom.

Eventually the police put out a dragnet on the brothers, leading them to the Carlos Avery area where one of the brothers was killed along with the hostage. The question never answered is whose bullet killed the hostage, the brothers or the cops. Vicki Wendell said the site is one of the eeriest sites in the county because of its seclusion and stillness. She said no one has reported any odd sightings either.
